FROM THE DUST
It all started in late 2014. Armed with only a midi keyboard, a few electric guitars, and a bottle of whiskey, founding members Dan Lee (lead vocals/keys), brother-in-law John “DQ” Barber (guitar/vocals), and Stephen Cornelison (songwriter) locked themselves in Dan’s home studio to embark on a 3-day marathon recording session. What was originally intended to be a novel indie Christmas album quickly turned into a boldly energetic and soulful 4-song EP with a life entirely of its own. Some say it was the whiskey; others say it was pure luck. One thing was for certain, though—Lee, Barber, and Cornelison knew they had something special on their hands.
Inspired by the likes of modern blues rockers such as the Black Keys and Alabama Shakes as well as the classic songwriting of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Motown, The Copper States’ unique sound is both nostalgic and unapologetically rowdy. Their live show is where the music truly comes to life, however. Dressed to the nines in matching bow ties, the band exudes a chemistry that is both classy and raw in a way that is reminiscent of a young Beatles in their legendary Cavern Club days. Packing out their very first show in January 2015 at the iconic Rhythm Room, The Copper States have quickly made waves in the local music scene for their live performances. The Copper States are currently working on their first full-length album, which is slated to be released at the end of 2017.
